The Church Is The People

Just another reminder of how the church is much more than the bricks holding it together. Tonight's lesson focused on knowing how the "people" make the church inviting, productive and safe. Tonight we also played a mean game of "Biblical Snapshot" which is a great way to get the kids using their bibles. I honestly can't remember who won this game or who deserves a little prize from the candy bucket. If you are reading this, let me know! Our hope is to have the books of the bible memorized by the end of the 20 weeks. However, we will start with just knowing where the books and chapters ARE in the bible.

Thank you to Sonia Lecce and Daniel David for sharing your story with us tonight about how you came to Our Saviour's UMC. Daniel shared briefly about how his confirmation experience 2 years ago was a life changing experience for him. Each week we will invite another member of OSUMC to share their personal faith journey before choosing this as their home church. This process helps students know a little about the people in the church they will soon decide to join. Although we did not have a full class tonight we enjoyed one another's company. We missed you Savannah!

A Generous God

When building a building, which one of the bricks is most important to the stability of the entire structure? Hmmmm, good question... The answer is none. There is not just one brick which supports the entire building, it's all of the bricks together.

A very simple but meaningful example. For the same principle applys to this confirmation class. Not one person supports the entire program. We come together with different strenghts and weaknesses. We share our gifts and talents making our experience even richer and enjoyable.

Tonight we discussed how confirmation is a gift. God's love for us is a gift! God loves us, forgives us, and accepts us. All of this is free! We talked about how our confirmation journey is one of recognizing and accepting this. What a joy to walk this journey together. Each of the kids were given a small stone which stands to remind them of this discussion. It is my hope they will keep this simple rock for many years to come as they reflect upon our time together getting to know the living God who has great plans for each of us.

Lock In-The Photos Say It All!

Class # 1

I want to welcome Marissa, Chloe, Konnor, Taylor and Savannah to our 2010 confirmation year! I am thrilled to have the opportunity to walk with you through this amazing 20 week journey. Parents, thank you for trusting me to guide your kids through such an important process. I look forward to getting to know your families better in the coming weeks. Always feel free to contact me with any questions. concerns, feedback or suggestions. I welcome it!

Tonight was our first official class. We discussed how in our faith journey, we do not walk alone. God is always with us. In addition to God, we have one another to walk with through life. We can lift one another up when we are down. We can guide one another through the difficult times, especially when there seems to be no hope in sight. To illustrate this lesson we led one another through a blindfolded trust walk. We had to be sure that our partner was neither harmed or lost during this activity. It was a challenging experience, but certainly made the object lesson clear.

In addition to the trust walk, we drew our personal lifelines on paper. The first time through I asked students to make a point to list memorable events, good and bad which have occured in their 14 or so years of life. I was surprised at how challenging it was for many of them to come up with memorable events. I suggest a journal from here on out :-)
I then asked them to take another color and draw the highs and lows of their faith. Of course we are familiar of the early days when our consisted of "Jesus Loves Me This I Know." As we grow, our faith changes. We begin to learn, question, and struggle with our faith. I think the youth were surprised at how our life experiences were very connected to our stages of faith. This lesson can certainly make us more sensitive to times when we feel discouraged in our faith.
Our first night was great and I am looking forward to more nights like this! See you next week.
