Class # 8

Well there is not much to write about tonight as we watched the first half of the movie "Luther." We had a little surprise visit from Brianna Scharrer who was a 2008 confirmation alumni... Don't worry guys, I picked up all of the popcorn from the floor so I think we can still have more next week. The movie only gets better the 2nd half so be sure to come next week.

First Fellowship Night Photos at the Killian's Home

Everyone seemed to be having a great time! There was food, video games galore, and there was "Wally!" What could have been better?

So who would like to offer their home next? We can't wait....

Class # 7

Tonight's class focused on the "Reformation" of the Roman Catholic church. The core teaching was to remind kids that the reformation could be understood as an argument within the Christian church in which "church family" members disagreed so strongly over certain key issues that some of the family left the church and went on their own way.
One particular exercise we did was to demonstrate Martin Luther's concern about the selling of "indulgences." He did not feel it was right that the church was selling God's forgiveness of sins with money. Each of the kids were given a stack of money. Some like Jack here had more than they knew what to do with. Others like Harry, only had enough to buy a small meal. The parallel to real life was extreme.
We sold 3 precious items.... The first item up for sale was a ticket that would give the student an Automatic "A" in any course. The second items was to get off the hook with your parents for any issue and the final item was an automatic pass to Heaven no matter what.
Again, Jack was swimming in the dough.... I think he won the automatic pass to Heaven. Darn!
Great snacks and everyone loved the different colored teeth.

I'm not exactly sure why the kids really wanted a picture of this but they did. Random and deep thoughts by the confirmation class of 2009!

All in all the kids are learning quite a bit about Martin Luther who broke away from the Roman Catholic Church. These important issues let to the Protestant Reformation and the formation of Protestant churches. Next week we will watch the first half of the movie "Luther" to put a visual timeline to all we have discussed to this point.

The kids continue to do a great job setting up the bells for the bell choir on a weekly basis. They never complain and the bell choir appreciates it immensely. Great job guys!

Photos From The Spertus Museum

MMMMMMMM..... Yummy McDonalds! We actually ate after the museum, but everything imported backwards. Bear with me guys...

Off to our destination "Chicago Spertus Museum"

The items all have a unique story but you will have the ask the kids about them to see what they are. I hope you will ask, and I hope they remember...

The kids were asked to draw one thing they recognize in the museums permanant collection and one they they do not recognize. We then learned about the items they were not familiar with and some items had very interesting stories.

This is a picture of the Museums "Permanant Collection"

What a great view, but not everyone felt as comfortable near the windows from that high up.

Photos From The Jewish Synagogue

My favorite thing s about most of these photos is
seeing what Harry will do next. As you can see if you look very hard, Harry has gone straight to the back and has his entire face smashed against the window. Funny thing, when I asked Rabbi Weiss why he thought the our kids were so excited about wear a yamika, his response was:
"Well, when the Catholic groups come they immediately go for the red yamikas so they can look like the Pope, but I have no idea why these Methodist boys find this so amusing."
I love it!
So we didn't always clap in unison, but we did the best we could.

All in all this was a great experience, thank you for making it priority to be there...
