Tonight's class focused on the "Reformation" of the Roman Catholic church. The core teaching was to remind kids that the reformation could be understood as an argument within the Christian church in which "church family" members disagreed so strongly over certain key issues that some of the family left the church and went on their own way.
One particular exercise we did was to demonstrate Martin Luther's concern about the selling of "indulgences." He did not feel it was right that the church was selling God's forgiveness of sins with money. Each of the kids were given a stack of money. Some like Jack here had more than they knew what to do with. Others like Harry, only had enough to buy a small meal. The parallel to real life was extreme.
We sold 3 precious items.... The first item up for sale was a ticket that would give the student an Automatic "A" in any course. The second items was to get off the hook with your parents for any issue and the final item was an automatic pass to Heaven no matter what.
Again, Jack was swimming in the dough.... I think he won the automatic pass to Heaven. Darn!
Great snacks and everyone loved the different colored teeth.
I'm not exactly sure why the kids really wanted a picture of this but they did. Random and deep thoughts by the confirmation class of 2009!
All in all the kids are learning quite a bit about Martin Luther who broke away from the Roman Catholic Church. These important issues let to the Protestant Reformation and the formation of Protestant churches. Next week we will watch the first half of the movie "Luther" to put a visual timeline to all we have discussed to this point.
The kids continue to do a great job setting up the bells for the bell choir on a weekly basis. They never complain and the bell choir appreciates it immensely. Great job guys!
