Week two of our confirmation study focused on “What is confirmation?” The goal was to introduce the youth to what confirmation means and how it relates to baptism. We started the evening off with a visual example of what it means to be in community. By building a brick wall and asking kids “Which one of these bricks “IS” the wall.” After a couple of minutes of their brains trying to make sense of which brick was the wall, someone finally grasped the idea we were trying to show. No “ONE” brick is the wall, they are all necessary to make a strong wall----Right--- just as each of us in this confirmation journey is important to the makeup of the class. This class focused on looking at the “blocks” used to build this years program. In our small groups we discussed the definition of confirmation, read through the building blocks of confirmation and finally related it to their decision to be confirmed. We are taking baby steps in this learning process.

The next step was explaining the “gift.” A wrapped present was sent around the class as kids reminisced about special gifts they have received in the past. This was a great transition into explaining Gods love is a “gift” to each of us. God loves us, forgives us, and accepts us regardless of whether or not we are deserving. Our baptism was also a gift. The issue for us during our confirmation journey is whether we want to accept the gift.

Finally our verse this evening was Matthew 7:24-27 (The wise man built his house upon the rock) and Joshua 4:1-6 (These stones will be a sign among you, an occasion to tell the story) ~ Upon opening the gift, an array of stones were found. Each of the kids were asked to take home a stone not only as a reminder of the strong foundation of Jesus we build our faith upon, but to remind them of the story they are beginning to shape for their future. One they will someday tell their children about.
